How to Use This Chapter
In the earlier chapters you always knew which idea to look for: a check, a fork, a mating pattern. In a real game nobody tells you. These 300 puzzles are mixed, just like real positions. Some are mates, some win material with a combination, and some need a careful count of an exchange.
1. Solve without moving the pieces. Look only at the diagram and calculate in your head.
2. Write the full line in a notebook — your moves and your opponent's best replies.
3. Use the CCT scan every time: checks, captures, threats, for both sides.
4. Time yourself. Try to spend no more than five minutes on a puzzle. If you cannot find it, mark it and come back later.
5. Score yourself honestly using the chart at the end of the book: two points for a fully correct line, one point if your first move was right but you missed an important reply.
The puzzles are arranged in four levels of 75: Level 1 (puzzles 1–75) needs one or two moves of calculation; Level 4 (226–300) needs three moves or more, or a quiet first move that is hard to find.
NoteIn every diagram the side to move is shown under the board. When the question says "Find the best move", the best move wins material or gives a decisive advantage — it is never just a small improvement.
