1.1 All Rook Endings Are Drawn?
There is an old saying: all rook endings are drawn. It is not true, but it contains a lesson: rook endings are full of defensive resources, and an extra pawn is often not enough. What decides most rook endings is activity — of the rook and of the king.
- An active rook attacks pawns, cuts off the enemy king or supports its own passed pawn from behind.
- A passive rook only defends: it stands in front of its own pawn or guards a weak pawn from the side.
- Often it is right to give up a pawn to activate your rook. A passive rook usually loses; an active rook usually draws — or wins.
Example 1.1 · The pawn runs with support
White's king stands in front of its pawn and the rook on c7 controls the seventh rank.
1.e6! — the pawn advances at once. White's king shields it from checks and the rook on c7 keeps the black king away from the queening square. Every white piece works together, while Black's rook can only give a few harmless checks.
Example 1.2 · Shelter first
White's king must hide from rook checks before the pawn can advance.
1.♔a7! walks out of the checks and supports the pawn. Then b7 and b8 follow. In rook endings the king is the pawn's best bodyguard: put it in front of or beside the pawn, where the enemy rook cannot reach it with checks.
Remember
- Rook endings are decided by activity, not just material.
- An active rook attacks; a passive rook only defends.
- Give up a pawn to activate your rook if necessary.
- The king is the pawn's best shelter from checks.
