6.1 Strength and Weakness
An isolated pawn has no friendly pawns on the files next to it. On d4 (or d5 for Black) it gives space and two outposts (e5 and c5 for White), and it opens lines for the pieces. But it cannot be protected by pawns, and the square in front of it is a perfect blockade square for the opponent.
- With the IQP: keep pieces on the board, put a knight on e5, aim the bishop and queen at h7, use the rook on e1, and look for the d5 break.
- Against the IQP: blockade the square in front of the pawn (d5) with a knight, exchange pieces, and attack the pawn in the endgame.
Example 6.1 · The Panov IQP
A typical IQP position from the Caro-Kann, Panov Attack. White's d4-pawn is isolated.
White's rook goes to e1 and the bishop to e4, putting pressure on d5 and the black kingside. Black answers with ...♗f6 and ...♘ce7, piling up on d4 and preparing to blockade. Both sides follow the plans of the structure.
Example 6.2 · The battery against h7
The same position. White can also aim the queen and bishop at h7.
The battery ♗c2 and ♕d3 aims at h7, and Black has to watch for sacrifices and a knight jump to e5 or g5. The move a3 stops ...♘b4, which would hit the bishop and the d5-square. Every white move has a job connected to the IQP structure.
Remember
- The IQP gives activity and outposts but is weak in the endgame.
- With the IQP: active pieces, attack, the d5 break.
- Against the IQP: blockade the square in front of it and exchange pieces.
- Every exchange helps the side playing against the IQP.
