4.1 Rooks Need Open Files
Rooks are the last pieces to join the game because they need open lines. An open file has no pawns on it; a half-open file has only enemy pawns. Put your rooks on these files, double them if you can, and use the file to reach the seventh or eighth rank.
Example 4.1 · The d-file in the Caro-Kann
Both sides have castled on opposite sides. The d-file is half-open for White.
White's rooks will use the d-file, and the h5-pawn gives White space on the kingside. Black must be careful not to let a white rook reach d7. When you castle long, your rook is already on the d-file — one reason why queenside castling suits open positions.
4.2 The Seventh Rank
A rook on the seventh rank attacks the enemy pawns from the side, where they are not protected by other pawns, and it often traps the enemy king on the back rank. Two rooks on the seventh are usually decisive.
Example 4.2 · Into the seventh
A simple rook ending. White's king has a flight square on h2, so there is no back-rank danger.
1.♖c7 attacks b7 and a7 from the side, and Black has to defend passively with 1...♖b8. The natural counterattack 1...♖d2? loses at once to 2.♖c8+ ♖d8 3.♖xd8# — the rook on the seventh also creates back-rank threats. A rook on the seventh rank is worth about a pawn by itself. Before you open a file for your rook, make sure your own king has a flight square — like the h2-square here.
Remember
- Rooks belong on open and half-open files.
- Double your rooks to win control of a file.
- A rook on the seventh rank attacks pawns from the side and traps the king.
- Make luft for your king before your rooks go on adventures.
