5.1 The Check on b5

With 3.♗b5+ White tries to keep the pawn: after 3...♗d7 the bishop retreats to c4 or e2. Against 4.♗e2 Black simply takes on d5. Against 4.♗c4 Black develops with ...♗g4 and ...♗f5 and wins the pawn back later.

Diagram 5.1Black to move

Example 5.1 · 4.♗e2

The bishop retreats to e2. The d5-pawn is no longer defended.

Black takes back on d5, puts the bishop on f5 and builds the familiar setup with ...e6 and ...♗e7.

Diagram 5.2Black to move

Example 5.2 · 4.♗c4

The bishop defends d5. Black uses the time to develop with tempo.

4...♗g4 provokes f3, weakening White's kingside; then the bishop goes to f5 and the knight regains the pawn on d5. White's pieces are awkwardly placed.

5.2 3.Nc3 and 3.Nf3

Diagram 5.3Black to move

Example 5.3 · 3.♘c3

White develops and allows the recapture.

After 4.♗c4 ♘b6 5.♗b3 Black develops naturally. Be careful with ...♗g4 when White's bishop is on b3: tricks on f7 with ♗xf7+ and ♘g5 can appear. The bishop on f5 is safer.

After 3.♘f3 ♘xd5 4.d4 the game transposes to the main line of Lesson 2.

Remember

  1. Against 3.♗b5+, play 3...♗d7.
  2. Against 4.♗e2, take on d5; against 4.♗c4, play ...♗g4 and ...♗f5.
  3. Against 3.♘c3, take on d5 and develop normally.
  4. Watch out for tricks on f7.
