How to Use This Test
In a real game nobody tells you "there is a mate here" or "you must defend". In this chapter the puzzles are mixed: some are mates, some are attacks that win material, and some ask you to find the only defence. Look at each position with fresh eyes and use the method of this book: count attackers and defenders, look at every check, and ask what your opponent threatens.
Work out the full line in your head first, then play it on the board. Every puzzle here has its solution built in: press “Show solution” when you want to check your line.
NoteThe puzzles go from easier to harder. If you get stuck on the ★★★ puzzles, leave them for a few days and come back — the solution often appears when you look again.
