Pawn Storms and Opposite-Side Castling
When pawns become attackers
In this lesson you will learn
- Why pawns can attack when the kings castle on opposite sides
- How a pawn storm opens files towards the king
- The race: who gets there first?
- The hook: attacking a pawn that has moved forward

12.1 A Race Between Two Attacks
When both kings castle on the same side, pushing the pawns in front of your king is risky: it weakens your own shelter. But when the kings castle on opposite sides — for example White on the queenside and Black on the kingside — White can push the g- and h-pawns without exposing the white king. The pawns become battering rams.
Such positions are usually a race. Both sides storm the enemy king, and the one who opens lines first wins. Every tempo counts: a single defensive move can lose the race.
12.2 How a Storm Works
The attacking pawns have one job: to open files for the rooks and queen. A pawn that reaches g5 or h5 attacks the pawns in front of the king. If the defender exchanges, a file opens; if the defender lets the pawn advance, it drives away the knight on f6 or creates holes on f6 and h6.
A pawn that the defender has already moved forward — such as a pawn on h6 or g6 — is called a hook. It gives the attacking pawns something to bite on: g5 against a pawn on h6 opens the g-file at once.
12.3 Worked Examples
Cover the text below each diagram and find the best move before reading on.

White to move. How should the attack continue?
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.hxg7+ ♔g8 2.♗d4 ♕xc2+ 3.♕xc2 — White wins the queen.
Example 12.2

Example 12.3
White to move. How should the attack continue?
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.gxh6 g6 2.♘f6+ ♔f8 3.♘xe8 — White wins a rook and the attack goes on.
Example 12.4
White to move. How should the attack continue?
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.hxg6 ♖xb2+ 2.♔c1 hxg6 3.♖fxg6+ — White's attack is decisive even without winning material at once.
Example 12.5
White to move. How should the attack continue?
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.hxg6 hxg6 2.♗xe5 ♕xb2+ 3.♘xb2 — White wins the queen and the attack goes on.
Example 12.6
White to move. Find the mate.
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.exf7 h6 2.f8=♕+ ♔h7 3.♕xg7# — the final position is the queen lands next to the king, protected by a knight.
Remember
- With opposite-side castling, pawn storms are safe and strong.
- The storm's job is to open files for rooks and queen.
- Advanced defending pawns are hooks: attack them.
- It is a race. Count tempi, and do not waste one on defence unless you must.
