Mate in 2.
Removing the Defenders
Take away the guard, then strike
In this lesson you will learn
- How to identify the key defender of the king
- Capturing, exchanging and deflecting defenders
- Sacrifices that destroy the pawn shelter
- Why the knight on f6 is the king's best friend
Every board on this page is live. Move the pieces by tapping or dragging, click any move in the lines to see that position, and press ↺ to start again.
10.1 Every King Has a Bodyguard
A castled king is usually protected by three pawns and one or two pieces. The most important defender is often the knight on f6: it covers h7, h5, g8, e8 and d7, blocks the f-file and keeps the queen away from h5. A bishop on e7 or g7 and a rook on f8 also play their part.
When you attack, find the piece that holds the defence together and ask how to remove it. There are three ways:
1. Capture it, even at the cost of material: ♗xf6 or ♖xf6 is a typical
exchange sacrifice.
2. Exchange it for one of your less important pieces.
3. Deflect it: give it a target elsewhere, so that it leaves its post.
10.2 Destroying the Pawn Shelter
Pawns are defenders too. A sacrifice on h7, g7 or g6 can rip open the king's position: ♗xh7+ (Chapter 8), ♗xg7 or ♖xg6+. After the sacrifice the king stands naked, and the attacker's remaining pieces arrive with gain of time.
The idea is the same as with pieces: the defender loses a guard, and the count of attackers against defenders tips decisively in the attacker's favour.
10.3 Worked Examples
In every example one defender holds Black's (or White's) position together. Identify it before reading the solution.
Example 10.1
White to move. Find the mate.
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.fxg7+ ♕xg7 2.♖c8+ ♖e8 3.♖xe8# — the final position is a back-rank mate: the king is shut in on its first rank by its own pawns.
Example 10.2
White to move. Find the mate.
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.♕xa8+ ♘b8 2.♕xb8# — the final position is a back-rank mate: the king is shut in on its first rank by its own pawns. Other defences do not help: 1.♕xa8+ ♘d8 2.♕xd8#.
Example 10.3
White to move. Find the mate.
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.♕xc8+ ♖e8 2.♕xe8# — the final position is a back-rank mate: the king is shut in on its first rank by its own pawns.
Example 10.4
Black to move. Find the mate.
Find the key move.
Solution. 1...♖xc2+ 2.♔d1 ♕e2# — the final position is the queen lands next to the king, protected from afar by a bishop. Other defences do not help: 1...♖xc2+ 2.♔b1 ♖c1#.
Example 10.5
White to move. Find the mate.
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.♕xe8+ ♘f8 2.♕xf8# — the final position is a back-rank mate: the king is shut in on its first rank by its own pawns.
Example 10.6
White to move. How should the attack continue?
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.♕xh7+ ♔f8 2.♘xg5 gxf1=♕+ 3.♔xf1 ♕e8 4.♕h8+ ♔e7 5.♕xe8#
Remember
- Find the key defender: often the knight on f6 (or f3).
- Capture, exchange or deflect it, even at the cost of material.
- Pawns in front of the king are defenders too; sacrifices can remove them.
- Keep enough attackers to finish the job.
