Find the only defence.
Stopping an Attack
Five ways to defend
In this lesson you will learn
- Capturing the most dangerous attacker
- Blocking lines and covering key squares
- Exchanging queens — the defender's best friend
- Bringing new defenders and the counter-sacrifice
Every board on this page is live. Move the pieces by tapping or dragging, click any move in the lines to see that position, and press ↺ to start again.
15.1 Five Defensive Methods
1. Capture the attacker. The simplest defence is to take the most
dangerous attacking piece, even if it costs material.
2. Block the line. Put a piece on the file or diagonal that leads to
your king.
3. Cover the key square. Bring a piece that guards the mating square
or the escape squares.
4. Exchange queens. Without the queen most attacks die. Offer
exchanges, especially with check.
5. Give back material. A counter-sacrifice that breaks the attack is
often better than holding on to an extra piece and getting mated.
15.2 Defend With the Least Valuable Piece
If you can stop a threat in several ways, choose the one that keeps your position healthy: a pawn move that blocks is fine if it does not create new weaknesses; a piece that covers the square should not abandon another important job. And always check that your defence does not walk into a new tactic.
15.3 Worked Examples
In every example one side is under attack. Find the defence that stops it.
Example 15.1
White to move. What is the threat, and how do you stop it?
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.♘xd6 ♔f8 2.c6 — the only good defence, and the position holds. Black threatened ♖d1#. Other moves lose.
Example 15.2
Black to move. What is the threat, and how do you stop it?
Find the key move.
Solution. 1...♖xd2 2.♗xh7+ ♔f7 — the only good defence, and the position holds. White threatened ♖xd8#. Other moves lose.
Example 15.3
Black to move. What is the threat, and how do you stop it?
Find the key move.
Solution. 1...♖c1+ 2.♕g1 ♖xg1+ — the only good defence, and the position holds. White threatened ♕d8#. Other moves lose.
Example 15.4
White to move. What is the threat, and how do you stop it?
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.♖xd3 ♗xd3 2.cxd3 — the only good defence, and the position holds. Black threatened ♗xc2#. Other moves lose.
Example 15.5
White to move. What is the threat, and how do you stop it?
Find the key move.
Solution. 1.♖xe2 ♔g8 2.gxh3 — the only good defence, and White is even better. Black threatened ♖e1#. Other moves lose.
Remember
- Capture the attacker, block, cover, exchange queens, or give material back.
- Check your own forcing moves first: a defensive check gains a tempo.
- Defend so that you survive the next three moves, not just the next one.
- Without the queen, most attacks die.
