Draws, Results and Etiquette

How to offer, claim and behave

In this lesson you will learn

  • The right way to offer a draw
  • Claiming repetition and the 50-move rule
  • Good manners at the board

Every board on this page is live. Move the pieces by tapping or dragging, click any move in the lines to see that position, and press ↺ to start again.

10.1 Offering a draw

The correct order is: make your move on the board, offer the draw, then press your clock. Both players write “=” on the scoresheet. An offer cannot be withdrawn and stays valid until your opponent accepts it, rejects it (by saying so or by touching a piece) or the game ends. Do not offer draws again and again: that disturbs your opponent and the arbiter may penalise it.

10.2 Claiming a draw

Threefold repetition: if the same position appears three times with the same player to move, the player to move may claim a draw. If the repetition will appear after your next move, write that move on your scoresheet, do not play it, and claim. 50-move rule: if the last 50 moves by each player had no capture and no pawn move, you may claim. If the same position appears five times, or 75 moves pass without a capture or pawn move, the game is drawn automatically.

10.3 Etiquette

  1. Shake hands before and after the game.
  2. Do not talk, comment on the game or analyse near players who are still playing.
  3. If you resign, stop the clocks and say so clearly, or tip over your king.
  4. Sign both scoresheets with the result.
  5. Win modestly and lose with dignity.

Remember

  1. Move, offer the draw, press the clock.
  2. An offer cannot be withdrawn.
  3. Claim repetition before playing the repeating move (write it down first).
  4. Five-fold repetition and 75 moves: automatic draw.
  5. Respect your opponent and the arbiter.
